Background of ISCIC-6 & ISCOC-9

A glance at the current scientific literature would testify that synthetic chemistry in Asia has reached a level that we would proudly proclaim to be "world class". The development is particularly aggressive in the Chinese community (see http://pubs.acs.org/cen/coverstory/83/8321china.html). About 15 years ago, a group of prominent organic chemists had the foresight to establish a symposium (ISCOC) based in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong in which organic chemists came to disclose their latest results, discuss trends and foster new collaborations as well as cultivate academic exchanges. The positive results convinced the inorganic counterpart to adopt the model and establish an equivalent venue for the inorganic chemists (ISCIC) 5 years later. Today, these two symposia have evolved to be a major forum whereby we can showcase the intensive activities that are ongoing in the Chinese community, not only in Asia, but also other parts of the world such as N America, Europe, Australasia, etc. These symposia provide a platform for the Chinese to communicate and work with other communities as an effort to develop chemistry into an area of truly trans-national, trans-cultural and trans-ethnic science. Through a common language - Chemistry - we communicate our ideas to our peers and our students the value of chemistry research and its impact on the global economy and human civilization.

SNIC, with the kind support of the international committees, and for the first time in the history of both symposia, has brought them outside the mainland China, Hong Kong & Taiwan. Blessed with an established NUS Chemistry, a new-born NTU Chemistry, and a range of research institutes under A*STAR that are engaged in pure and applied chemistry research, Singapore is delighted to host these symposia in Dec 2006. We invite you to share with us this important milestone of ISCOC & ISCIC.

All scientific presentations are in English.
